China paves the way for the abolition of animal experiments for the registration of cosmetics.
On 11.11.2016 the NMPA published Announcement 147, 2016 concerning the Neutral Red Uptake (NRU test), a standard cytotoxicity test which can be used as an alternative to animal experiments. This test method will be added to Chapter 6 of the “Safety and Technical Standards for Cosmetics” of 2015 as 18th toxicological test method.
Our experience shows that it will take some time until the NMPA approved test labs will implement this method finally, but yet this is an important step for China towards an animal-experiment-free cosmetics sector.
