China GB 4943.1-2022 safety requirements for audio/video, information and communication technology equipment will come into force on August 1, 2023.
Once in effect, the new standard GB 4943.1-2022 “Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment—Part 1: Safety requirements” will completely replace GB 4943.1-2011 “Information Technology Equipment Safety Part 1: General Requirements” and GB 8898-2011 “Audio, video and similar electronic apparatus—Safety requirements” which both GB standards have been used as the basis for mandatory product certification (CCC) testing. The deadline for certificate renewal is July 31, 2024, so that existing certificate holders have sufficient time during the 2-year transitional period to submit samples, and complete the application for renewal.
Highlights
GB 4943.1-2022 is a consolidated and revised GB standard, covering 10 chapters and 28 appendices in 346 pages, that aims to comprehensively improve the level of safety and security in the design, production, testing and certification, sales and daily use of audio, video, information technology and communication technology equipment. New safety requirements and testing methods have been added to the new GB standard in consideration of the following 6 sources of danger:
- electric-induced injury
- electric-induced fire
- injury caused by harmful substances
- mechanical-induced injury
- thermal burns
- sound and light radiation
On July 26, 2022, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) held a press conference to highlight and explain how the new GB 4943.1-2022 standard could avoid issues from harming the user as below:
- Requirements to the sound pressure level limits and other safety aspects of headset/headphone products to protect the hearing health of consumers.
- Requirements to overcharge protection, temperature protection, fall protection and other safety aspects of chargeable batteries for consumers that may be endangered by potential safety hazards such as battery leakages, burns, explosions, etc.
Although GB 4943.1-2022 takes reference to international standards such as IEC 62368-1:2018, the GB standard adds special requirements for safety protection in consideration of China’s high-altitude areas, tropical climate conditions, etc. Due to the fact that shock damage can easily be caused by electrical breakdown when the air is thinner, the GB 4943.1-2022 standard requires stricter requirements for air insulation when designing and manufacturing electronic products.
